This collection if a compilement of the redords of Joseph Woodwell Company and the papers of the Woodwell and Herron families. These records include deeds, mortgages, agreements, financial records, correspondence, newspaper articles as well as contracts, blueprints, stocks and certificates. They give a history of the J. Woodwell Co. and his family in addition to the Herron family.

Joseph Woodwell Company began in 1847 as a small hardware store. Over the years it expanded as it rebuilt and added other departments. It was one of the first hardware and industrial supply houses in Pittsburgh. When Joseph died, his sons continued in the company.
